How to Type ó (o with Acute Accent) on Any Device

The ó — an o with an acute accent — appears in Spanish (só, también, adiós), Portuguese (avó, só, pó), Irish (mór, óg, tóg), and several other languages. It’s one of the more frequently needed accented characters for anyone writing in these languages. Here’s every method for typing it, organized by platform.

Windows

Method 1: Alt Code

Hold the left Alt key, type the number on your numeric keypad (Num Lock must be on), then release:

• Alt + 0243 → ó (lowercase)
• Alt + 0211 → Ó (uppercase)

Note: This requires a dedicated numeric keypad. Most laptops don’t have one — if yours doesn’t, Method 2 is your best option.

Method 2: US International Keyboard Layout

If you have the US International keyboard layout enabled:

• Press ‘ (apostrophe) then o → ó
• Press ‘ then Shift + O → Ó

This works in every Windows app and is the fastest method for regular use. No numeric keypad required.

Method 1: Option Key Shortcut

• Press Option + e, then press o → ó

Method 3: ABC Extended Keyboard

If you use the ABC Extended keyboard layout on Mac, the same Option + e combination applies. Full access to all accent combinations, no extra setup needed beyond enabling the layout.

iPhone and iPad

Tap and hold the o key. A popup will appear showing ó, ò, ô, ö, õ, ø, and œ. Slide to ó and release. Built into the iOS keyboard — no setup required.

Android

Same method: tap and hold o and select ó from the popup. If accented options don’t appear, switch to Gboard (Google’s keyboard), which supports accented characters across all major languages.

Method 1: US International Keyboard

With the US International keyboard enabled:

To enable it: Settings → Device → Keyboard → Change input methods → Add US International.

ó vs. ò vs. ô vs. õ — What’s the Difference?

These four characters are distinct and appear in different languages:

• ó (acute accent, slanting right) — Spanish, Portuguese, Irish, Polish
• ò (grave accent, slanting left) — Italian, Catalan
• ô (circumflex, hat shape) — French, Portuguese
• õ (tilde) — Portuguese, Estonian

On Windows: ò is Alt + 0242, ô is Alt + 0244, õ is Alt + 0245. On Mac: ò is Option + ` then o, ô is Option + i then o, õ is Option + n then o. On mobile, all four appear in the hold-key popup when you hold the o key.
